Therapies Explained

Psychotherapy and Therapeutic Counselling

Psychotherapy is defined as  set of techniques intended to improve emotional or behavioural issues of individuals, groups or families. The issues dealt with are ones which often make it hard for people to manage their lives and achieve their goals. Psychotherapy is aimed at these problems, and  helps people to solve them via a number of different approaches and techniques

Psychotherapy generally differs from counselling in that it seeks to deal with deeper behavioural and emotional problems. Because of this psychotherapy has often required a longer commitment from the client, except that is in the case of brief or strategic therapies.

Brief therapy differs from other schools of therapy in that it emphasises a focus on a specific problem and direct intervention. In brief therapy, the therapist takes responsibility for working more pro-actively with the client in order to treat conditions faster. Rather than the formal analysis of historical causes of distress, brief therapy helps the client to view the present from a wider more functional context and understanding. By becoming aware of this new understanding, clients will undergo spontaneous and generative change.

I use brief therapy techniques which focus on bringing about positive changes in the fastest most effective way possible. Because of the focus on results, rather than the study of the problem itself, brief therapy has a superb  record of dealing with a wide range of issues and problems very quickly. Clients are often amazed that a problem that has been with them for years and years suddenly evaporates, often in as few as two or three sessions.

Neurolinguistic Psychotherapy & Counselling
Neurolinguistic Psychotherapy (NLPt) and Therapeutic Counselling is a specialised form of Counselling and Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP). It is broad based and draws on concepts from many areas of counselling and psychology.
NLPt is brief compared with many other forms of therapy.  Its main focus is to identify your desired state, to clarify your goals and dreams and to work with you using your own and new resources and skills.
Our past and experiences are the basis of what we are and experience now. However NLPt spends less time analysing and understanding why these things happened; it is more interested in how these affect our present and our ideas about our future and how we can bring about the desired change. NLPt is very goal orientated, your goals and your dreams..
NLP has developed a vast range of approaches to deal with a variety of situations and problems. It recognises that each of us is unique and has an individual view of the world. It is not mechanistic and it is the skill of the therapist to use the most suitable approach or intervention that will bring about a true and lasting change in your life.

EMIT (Eye movement Integration Therapy)

Eye movement Integration Therapy is a method of dealing fully and completely with trauma or traumatic memories. Whether these be caused by being involved in accidents, violent scenes, rape and sexual abue, or childhood abuse and trauma, EMIT will provide treatment and release from the problems in a way that no other therapy can.

EMIT sessions tend to be longer than normal therapy session, Typically two hours. The process would normally consist of an initial assessment session of around one hour, followed at a later date by a full EMIT session.

EMIT is extremely effective. My case records have examples of clients dealing with extreme abuse spanning many years that has blighted their lives being relesed in three to four sessions.

Time Line Therapy™
Time Line Therapy is a process that allows us to gain freedom from the negative emotions and limiting decisions of our past. Negative emotions such as anger, fear, sadness, regret. Limiting decisions are experienced negations and beliefs such as: "I am not good enough", "I can never succeed", "I am not capable", "I am not loved".
Limiting decisions and beliefs prevent you from achieving your true potential, from living your life to the full. These emotions, beliefs and decisions are born in the past, but have stayed with you and affect and control your life in many ways. Time Line Therapy™ allows you to leave these feelings and beliefs in the past where they belong and to learn from your experiences.  This allows you to create more useful and empowering alternatives.

Hypnotherapy
Many people associate hypnotherapy with stage hypnosis or as shown on films or Television. This is far from  the reality and the truth about clinical hypnosis.
The hypnotic or trance state used under therapy is quite natural. We experience it many times a day, whilst daydreaming, reflecting, pondering and remembering events and even whilst driving. It is simply an opportunity to communicate directly with the non conscious mind.
Hypnotherapy is only used by your agreement and consent. However at times it can be a useful part of the therapeutic and change process.

Clean Language & Symbolic Modelling

These are recent developments within the NLP therapy techniques. They are based on the work of David Groves, a New Zealand Psychotherapist. These techniques have been introduced through the work of James Lawley and Penny Tompkins. These techniques allow the client to explore their experiences and find solutions using only their own experiences and personal descriptions.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT is increasingly recognised as the Therapy used by the medical profession. It uses the the cognitive mind to deal with distortions in thinking and behaviour. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is greatly enhanced by the use of other techniques such as visualisation techniques and goal setting. As a qualified practitioner in I use these techniques, where appropriate to enhance the change process.
